GENERAL PATTON MEMORIAL MUSEUM, CHIRIACO SUMMIT, CALIF.
1 hour East of Palm Springs, on the 10 Frwy.)
The mission of the General Patton Memorial Museum is to promote peace by honoring the service and sacrifice of America’s veterans while educating the public on modern U.S. military history through the preservation and interpretation of artifacts from the major conflicts of the 20th and 21st centuries.
“Preserving the peace through lessons of the Past”.
I have joined the board of directors to help maintain the 23 tanks and other military vehicles in our inventory.
On November 11, the General Patton Memorial Museum celebrated its 30th Anniversary and Grand Opening of the its new exhibits, sponsored by the Coeta and Donald Barker Foundation. The new educational exhibits take you through the Chandi West Wing and discusses the chain of events from Patton’s early years to the Great War, into World War II.
The Goal of the Museum’s exhibits are intended to offer the public an opportunity to come into the Museum with an interest and leave with the Pride, Passion, and Patriotism of who we are and where we came from. The stories that we share stretch from the Homefront effort to the women in the service, through the war including D-Day, Battle of the Bulge, Pacific and the Holocaust. These stories throughout the exhibits no longer become stories, they become memories that impact the lives of our guests. Through the dedication and hard work of the Museum staff, we are honored to see the progress of the Museum in such short amount of time. These exhibits are intended to serve as an insight to the war as a whole and I felt we accomplished that goal and then some. We hope you enjoy them.
I'am a U.S. Submarine veteran. And was qualified (authorized to wear the submarine Dolphins) on the WWII submarine USS Tunny, APSS-282 in 1969. I had joined the Tunny in March 1968, at Subic Bay Philippine Islands...where we were assigned Special Operations with the Navy SEALS. Taking them into Southern and Northern Viet Nam harbors for reconnaissance and other subversive operations. These operations had started in 1966 and ended in 1969. The Tunny was commissioned in 1942 and sank nine Japanese ships in WWII and participated in the Korean War.....and! Was the first missile submarine, carrying two Regulus I missiles. Which had to be launched on the surface. She was sunk as a target in 1970 off Catalina Island, Calif.
Can you see the guy sleeping in the rack above the torpedo?....in the forward torpedo room....the ladder goes to the escape hatch. We are also tied up to the Lavala Pier in Subic Bay, Philippine Islands. Our home port for our operations in Viet Nam, with the Navy SEALS.
